Omega-Brain project aims to assess the potential neuroprotective effect of long chain poli-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on different neurodevelopment stages in a birth cohort; in addition, an independent dietary intervention with walnuts among healthy adolescents will be also assessed. We will study whether air pollution (AP) neurotoxicity is modified by PUFA levels. The intervention study (WALNUTs, funded by ISCIII (CP14/00108)) is a randomized controlled trial with an intervention (n=400) group and a control group (n=400). The intervention is eating 30 g walnuts (~ 1,5g PUFA n-3) per day during six months and investigates its effects to neuropsychological development. The population-based birth cohort is part of INMA project with similar protocols as WALNUTs. In the present project, we will collect child/adolescent blood samples from cohort and intervention participants to analyze levels of PUFAs. PUFA measurements in cohort's cord blood are already available. AP exposure will be estimated using standard geocoding proceedings. In the third year, once the data will be collected and cleaned, linear regression models will be applied to assess the effect of the intervention to PUFA levels, the association between these biomarkers and neurodevelopment, and prenatal and concurrent APPUFA interactions, in which neuropsychological scores will be the outcome.
