With support from Novartis, the project “Healthcare System Strengthening for Cardiovascular Disease Management (Including Chagas) in the Gran Chaco Region of Tarija, Bolivia”—also known as CAYAC (Cardiovascular Yacuiba)—has played a key role in establishing an integrated cardiovascular care center within Hospital Fray Quebracho, the main referral hospital for the Gran Chaco region in southern Bolivia.

Led by the ISGlobal Chagas Initiative and implemented jointly with Fundación SANIT (Bolivia), with significant contributions from the Biostatistics and Data Management Unit (UBIOES-DM), the project has strengthened the broader health ecosystem surrounding the center through a comprehensive and sustainable approach. Its main objectives include:

  • Implementing a standardized, patient-centered model of care for the comprehensive management of Chagas disease and cardiovascular conditions within the framework of Bolivia’s National Health System.
  • Building local capacities through an integrated disease management model that enhances healthcare delivery across different levels of care.
  • Supporting the governance and coordination of health programmes by introducing standardized tools that facilitate evidence-based decision-making, promote integrated care, and improve referral and counter-referral pathways throughout the healthcare network.
  • Strengthening health research capacity by developing institutional structures and multidisciplinary teams capable of generating knowledge that informs health programmes and advances the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Chagas disease and cardiovascular diseases.

Through these efforts, CAYAC contributes to improving access to quality healthcare, fostering innovation, and enhancing the long-term sustainability of cardiovascular and Chagas disease care in the Gran Chaco region.
