Epidemiologic studies of stress among night shift workers are emerging, but limited. Furthermore, stress-related epigenetic modifications and their possible role as mechanisms for cardiovascular disease among this population is very limited. The CARDIO-SHIFTS study will address these gaps in our understanding of pathways of cardiovascular disease among night shift workers.

The main objective of CARDIO-SHIFTS is to clarify the relationship between night shift work and cardiovascular health and determine the role that stress plays in this association. The data for this study come from the Exposome Project for Health and Occupational Research study (EPHOR), a study which applied an exposome approach to collect data from night shift workers. These data allow for the characterization and study of how circadian misalignment relates to health and disease among night shift workers.

The CARDIO-SHIFTS study expands the focus of EPHOR to examine in detail how night shift work relates to cardiovascular health, specifically examining stress-related pathways that may directly or indirectly impact cardiovascular outcomes. Within CARDIO-SHIFTS, we will generate new data on epigenetic changes related to stress and cardiovascular health among night shift workers, focusing on non-coding RNA expression.
