Enric Banda completed his doctoral studies at the Federal Polytechnic School (ETH) in Zurich and received his PhD in physics from the University of Barcelona in 1979. During his active career he has been research professor at the Spanish National Research Council (1987), director of the Earth Sciences Institute in Barcelona (1988), secretary general of the Spanish National R&D Plan (1994), secretary of state for Universities and Research (1995), secretary general of the European Science Foundation (1998-2003), director of the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation and of the Catalan Institute for Advanced Studies (2004-2007), and director of innovation and environment at La Seda de Barcelona. Since 2009 he has been director of science, research and environment at “la Caixa” Banking Foundation. He has also served as vice president of the European Geophysical Society, editor-in-chief of Tectonophysics and European editor of Geophysical Research Letters (the American Geophysical Union). He has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed scientific paper and is a member of the Academia Europaea, and a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Between 2006 and 2012 he was president of Euroscience.
