ISGlobal Course on Arboviral Diseases in Barcelona

Arboviruses are responsible for numerous emerging diseases that have spread to different parts of the world, such as dengue and West Nile virus

22.04.2013

The second edition of ISGlobal's course on the Prevention, Detection and Management of Arboviral Diseases started today at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona. This course responds to the growing worldwide interest in arboviruses as a result of their rapid spread, which is primarily due to air transport, climate change and deforestation.

The five-day course targets professionals and students of medicine and other health sciences and will focus on the three major families of arboviruses and the diseases they cause:

  • The Flaviviridae (with a focus on yellow fever and dengue)
  • The Togaviridae (with a focus on chikungunya disease)
  • The Bunyaviridae

The course will provide a broad overview of arboviral diseases, dealing with key aspects such as virology, immunology, and pathology as well as the vectors responsible for transmitting these viruses (mosquitoes and ticks). Classes covering theoretical concepts will be complemented by seminars and workshops encouraging the active engagement of the students.

The course has been organised with the support of Kenogard-Valent BioSciences and Sanofi Pasteur and the collaboration of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Regional Council of Baix Llobregat in Barcelona.
