Excellence Maps, a tool developed by the Max Planck Society, the University of Zurich (UZH) and the Institute for Public Goods and Policies (IPP-CSIC), has published the fourth release of its scientific ranking (publication period 2012-2016). The web application visualises the performance of universities and research institutions overall and within 24 specific subject areas. In the current release, ISGlobal is ranked in 21st position worldwide in the subject area of Medicine. Another notable ranking is that of the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), which ranked fourth in the percentage of most cited publications at the global level.

The SCImago Institutions Ranking 2021 classifies research institutions using a series of indicators divided into three groups intended to reflect the characteristics of the organisation in three domains: research, innovation and societal impact (visibility of its websites). ISGlobal's current ranking is in the 10th percentile worldwide in research and in the 4th percentile in research in the Spanish health sector.

The Excellence Maps application is based on data collected by the SCImago Institutions Ranking. Performance is measured by the number of papers within a given subject area that are published in the top 10% most frequently cited publications (based on the Scopus database) or bookmarked (based on information from the Mendeley bibliographic reference manager). The app only considers institutions that have published at least 500 papers (articles, reviews or conference proceedings) during the publication period analysed.
