The Consultation Process of the Decade of Vaccines Collaboration Is Coming to a Close

The regional meeting held in Mexico closes the Americas consultation events

19.03.2012

The regional consultation process of the Decade of Vaccines Collaboration is reaching its final phase with the regional meeting of the Americas in Mexico. Twenty consultation events have been held in six regions (the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East and the Western Pacific) with the participation of some 1100 experts from more than 140 countries representing 290 organisations. The final Global Vaccine Action Plan incorporating the inputs from this consultation process will be submitted to the World Health Organization (WHO) at the Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly in May 2012 for discussion and possible adoption.

The Global Vaccine Action Plan is a joint initiative of the WHO, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the GAVI Alliance, the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The plan is structured around the objectives defined by the Decade of Vaccines Collaboration to identify a strategy that would integrate all aspects of immunisation, including research and development, delivery, global access to quality vaccines, and public and political support for vaccine programmes.

Together with PATH and the Sabin Vaccine Institute, ISGlobal has assumed responsibility for running the secretariat of the Decade of Vaccines Collaboration. The presentation of the final document to the World Health Assembly will mark the end of the first stage of the project. During the following phase it will be the responsibility of the all stakeholders to ensure the implementation of the action plan in their respective areas.
