Music and Science, meeting points

Many are those who today see a close relationship between science and art. At least appreciate similarities, meeting points between the two disciplines. It is therefore the CREAL has launched Arts and Science activities, which began this month with 'Music and Science', a dialogue between researchers of ISGlobal alliance research centre and two musicians.

Specifically, the event was attended by Kai Gleusteeen, concertmaster of Orquestra del Liceu and artistic director of Kaimerata; Josep M. Colom, pianist; Silvia de Sanjosé, researcher at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and collaborator at CREAL, and, Jordi Sunyer, CREAL codirector.

For all of them, science and music is their job and, although they love it, it is "no fun" because "as a job is an obligation" and the must "practice every day.” In this sense, according to Kai, 90% is practice and 10% is talent.

Colom explained that his love for music came of his sister, also a pianist. He began to connect with this art when he was a little child listening his sister play.

Regarding the energy they need, everyone agreed that it's never enough but they always find energy to keep working. Especially in the case of Silvia, "what gives me strength and energy is interacting with people around me, from different areas. This opens my mind and makes me feel more active."

Finally, Kai asked all participants to close their eyes and imagine a pleasant quotidian situation. The ‘game’ was to feel and see the differences between the images with and without music, while he played a small piece with his violin. The difference: huge.
