Created by Hospital Clínic and Leitat, this public-private initiative aims to promote the transfer of science to the market

16.03.2021

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) will be a collaborator of the Clinical Advanced Technologies Institute (CATI), a new health innovation centre being created by Barcelona’s Hospital Clínic and the Leitat technology centre. With an international focus, this new initiative will promote transferable technical knowledge in the health technology field and link it to the industrial sector.

Dr. Josep M. Campistol, CEO of Hospital Clínic, described the creation of CATI as “a great opportunity to coordinate projects that will enable multinationals, local companies and entrepreneurs to jointly develop technology and launch new business models with private funding, which can also support startups and invigorate local small businesses”.

The University of Barcelona (UB), Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona (HSJD) and the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) will also be involved in CATI. The new institute will be housed in a facility to be built in the vicinity of Hospital Clínic, where the UB’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is also located. The new centre will be accredited by ACCIÓ (Catalan Government) and recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.

“The creation of this new centre is excellent news as it will boost the innovation system and accelerate the digital transformation of the health care field,” commented Joan Bigorra, Director of Innovation at ISGlobal.
