The Private Sector as Project Implementer and Public Fund Receptor for the International Development

The private sector participation in development cooperation is not a new phenomenon at all but it is currently being boosted in Spain and other similar countries. The debate, however, mixes up different participation modalities with different goals and dynamics: the private sector as philanthropic partner; as development project implementer; as development target: or as development actor. The present document covers the second modality, which refers to the role of corporations as public fund receptors to undertake development projects, by analyzing its history, describing the diversity of criteria being used and suggesting a set of final thoughts to promote the debate.
