Mozambican Ambassador to Spain Visits Clínic Campus

This visit comes shortly after an ISGlobal delegation in Madrid forged closer ties with Mozambique

29.11.2021

Three weeks ago, a delegation from ISGlobal visited the new ambassador of the Republic of Mozambique to Spain, Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas, at the country’s diplomatic headquarters in Madrid. In response to an invitation extended at that time, the ambassador visited the ISGlobal offices on the Clínic Campus on Friday, 26 November, with the participation of a delegation from Hospital Clínic and the University of Barcelona’s Faculty of Medicine.

Attending the meeting on behalf of ISGlobal were Antoni Plasència, Director General; Núria Casamitjana, Training and Education Director; Clara Menéndez, Director of the Maternal, Child and Reproductive Health Initiative; Quique Bassat, Director of the Malaria Programme and inter-institutional scientific liaison between the CISM and ISGlobal; and María José Merino, Human Resources Manager. The meeting was also attended by Ricard Cervera, Academic Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Julià González, Cooperation Coordinator at Hospital Clínic.

“We are very grateful for this visit, which gave us an opportunity to highlight the many decades of collaboration between the institutions of the Clínic Campus, led by Hospital Clínic and the University of Barcelona, as well as the effective collaboration in research and training with Mozambique, through the active involvement of ISGlobal,” commented Antoni Plasència. “We also had the chance to jointly explore new opportunities to strengthen this collaboration in the coming years.”

Long-term Strategic Alliance

ISGlobal’s ties to Mozambique date back a quarter of a century, when researchers from Hospital Clínic and the University of Barcelona, working with Mozambican researchers and with support from the Government of Mozambique and Spanish Cooperation, set up the Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM). Since then, the strategic alliance between CISM and ISGlobal has driven both countries’ growth in the fields of research and training.
