New Spanish Secretary of State for Cooperation Visits ISGlobal

Role of research as a key component of development aid highlighted at meeting

21.02.2020

Following her recent appointment as Secretary of State for Cooperation, Ángeles Moreno Bau visited the head offices of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health. The Secretary’s visit served to raise the visibility of ISGlobal’s work and highlighted the institute’s historical relationship with Spanish cooperation and the important role played by research in development cooperation in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The first part of the meeting—one of the secretary’s first official visits since taking office—was a presentation of the institute’s work by Antoni Plasència, Director of ISGlobal, Denise Naniche (Scientific Director), Leire Pajín (Director of Global Development) and Gonzalo Vicente (General Manager). The Secretary of State for International Cooperation then explained the government’s objectives and plans for cooperation.

Among the topics discussed at the meeting were the importance of continuity in the work and of further strengthening ISGlobal’s research-based cooperation model. Other significant exchanges related to the ongoing strategic collaborations between ISGlobal and Spanish Cooperation in Bolivia, Morocco and Mozambique.

In particular, the Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM) was cited as one of the flagship projects of Spanish Cooperation. The Mozambican health research centre has been supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) since its foundation over 22 years ago.

Those attending the meeting reaffirmed their commitment to continue working together to seek solutions to the major challenges facing our society, including health equity, climate change and achieving the goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
