Night shift work has been associated with cancer risk, but the biological mechanisms are not well established. The HORMONIT study will evaluate the effects of circadian disruption due to night shift work on the production and timing of sex steroid hormones, the production of cytokines, and the metabolomic profile of night shift workers.

Approximately 60 male, rotating shift workers will be included in the HORMONIT study, funded partially by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III-FEDER (PI14/00444). All participants will be sampled twice on two working days (one during their day shift rotation and another during their night shift rotation). During each of the two days of data collection, all urine voids will be collected for 24 h, continuous personal measurements of light will be made, multiple blood samples will be extracted, and participants will respond to a baseline and separate day shift and night shift questionnaires.

The study will provide evidence on molecular and hormonal mechanisms to explain the increase in cancer and other common non-communicable diseases among night shift workers. It will also allow us to establish recommendations on optimal patterns for workers based on experimental evidence.
