Alberto Garcia-Basteiro Delivers the 'Young Lesson' at the Spanish Society of Pneumology Congress

The ISGlobal researcher's conference focused on research priorities in tuberculosis

ISGlobal researcher Alberto García-Basteiro has delivered today the “Young Epidemiological Lesson” conference at the 51st Congress of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery that took place in Palma de Mallorca, May 31 to June 3. The conference recognises young professionals (under 36 years of age) that carry out relevant research in the field of respiratory medicine and surgery.

Alberto García-Basteiro coordinates the tuberculosis area at the Health Research Center of Manhiça, Mozambique, and is a researcher at ISGlobal.  In his ‘Young Epidemiological Lesson’, entitled “Priorities in TB investigation, a great challenge to global health”, García-Basteiro made an analysis of the current situation of the global fight against the disease, the challenges for its control, and the research priorities in disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment. In turn, the ‘Young Clinical Lesson’ was given by Miriam Barrecheguren, who reviewed current evidence on COPD phenotypes, their application to the clinics, and future research.

The Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) is a scientific society that brings together over 4,000 respiratory health professionals in Spain: pneumologists, thoracic surgeons, nurses, respiratory physiotherapy and other national and international specialists in the field.  Its aim is to support scientific projects that advance the field of pneumology and thoracic surgery, and undertake initiatives on respiratory health that have a positive impact on the society.
