Improving tuberculosis case detection among contacts of bacteriologically confirmed TB patients using tongue swabs in a high-burden setting in Central Mozambique.

MOVE-TB is a prospective longitudinal study evaluating a universal, non-invasive, home-based strategy for tuberculosis (TB) screening among household and close contacts of bacteriologically confirmed TB patients in Mopeia District, Mozambique. The study will assess the performance of tongue swab testing using the PlusLife MiniDock MTB platform and evaluate whether repeated screening can further increase TB case detection.

Participants will undergo comprehensive TB screening, including symptom assessment, tuberculin skin testing, digital chest X-ray, tongue swab testing with PlusLife MiniDock MTB, and Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra testing on sputum and stool samples when indicated. The study will recruit 2,500 participants and evaluate the diagnostic yield, feasibility, acceptability, and operational impact of this approach, including repeated screening at 6 and 12 months.

By assessing both the initial and longitudinal yield of tongue swab-based screening, MOVE-TB aims to generate evidence to support the integration of innovative, sputum-free, community-based TB active case-finding strategies into routine TB control programmes in high-burden settings.
