GreyWaterBCN is the first comprehensive study to compare how different treatment technologies impact the microbiological and AMR profiles of toilet-sourced greywater (“toilet-treated greywater”) and the aerosols generated during its reuse in irrigation (“treated greywater aerosol”), and to assess their potential implications for human health.

The results generated by GreyWaterBCN will serve as a guide for the safe implementation of the new regulation in the city of Barcelona and will also help inform future safe applications of greywater reuse in other contexts, generating critical insights to guide safer and more sustainable urban water reuse strategies.

The main objective of GreyWaterBCN is to evaluate the microbiological and AMR risks in toilet-treated greywater and treated greywater aerosols, considering different treatment technologies. The goal is to provide key evidence to support the safe and effective implementation of greywater reuse systems in Barcelona, promoting environmental sustainability, public health, and compliance with regulatory frameworks, while also exploring new future uses for treated greywater.
