Kurt Straif
Associated ResearcherHe has an academic background in Medicine with board-certifications in Internal Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and received an MPH and a PhD in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health, University of California, Los Angeles.
His research interests cover environmental, occupational and behavioural risk and preventive factors of cancer for evidence-informed global cancer control in support of achieving the goals of the SDG 2030 agenda, and particularly SDG 3, Health, with a focus on non-communicable diseases. Since he has joined ISGlobal, he expanded his research focus towards the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and climate change and health.
At ISGlobal, Kurt Straif is involved in several projects, including OMEGA-NET, EPHOR, HERA, COVICAT and INTERCAMBIO.
Before joining ISGlobal, he has worked for almost two decades at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO) in Lyon, France as the Head of the IARC Monographs Programme and the Section of Evidence Synthesis and Classification, where he was responsible for the series of Monographs on the carcinogenicity of environmental agents, including tobacco (smoking, involuntary smoking, smokeless tobacco and betel quid); air pollution (including indoor and outdoor air pollution, diesel engine exhaust); radiofrequency electromagnetic fields; shift-work and circadian disruption; the IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention including Handbooks on cancer preventive effects of avoidance of obesity, and screening for breast and colorectal cancer.
He has received the Research Integrity Award, ISEE, the Distinguished Lecture in Occupational and Environmental Cancer, US NCI, and the US NIEHS Champion of Environmental Health Research Award. He is a Fellow of the Collegium Ramazzini.
