Oleguer Plana-Ripoll holds master’s degrees in mathematics and statistics, along with a PhD in epidemiology completed in 2016. Since earning his doctorate, he has received several prestigious awards for early career researchers, including a Marie Curie Fellowship in 2019, a Lundbeck Fellowship in 2021, a Sapere Aude Grant in 2022, and an ERC Starting Grant in 2024. In 2025, he joined ISGlobal as a Research Assistant Professor, a role he combines with his position as Professor of Psychiatric Epidemiology at Aarhus University in Denmark.

He leads the Population Mental Health Group, which applies advanced epidemiological methods and large-scale administrative data—such as electronic healthcare records—to investigate the causes and consequences of mental disorders. The group’s research focuses on several key areas: assessing the impact of mental disorders on health and societal outcomes, including comorbidity and mortality; exploring the social, health, and environmental determinants of mental disorders; and developing innovative strategies to enhance the accuracy of register-based studies. This includes integrating survey data to capture lifestyle and social factors typically missing from registers, and designing methods to account for changes in patient characteristics over time, which are crucial for evaluating potential interventions.
