Research Manager - Head of the Projects Unit - Data Protection Officer Infeccions víriques i bacterianes al món

 Joana Porcel-Carbonell, PhD in Neuropsychology, University of Barcelona; Clinical Psychologist.
She has worked as a clinical neuropsychologist at the Traumatic Brain Injured Association
(1996-2002), and at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital of Barcelona, as a psychologist and
researcher at the Multiple Sclerosis Unit (1996-2006).
From 2006 onwards, she works on research management, first at the pharma sector (2006-
2009), on project management, monitoring, GPCs training, scientific writing, and contract
negotiation. In 2009, she moved to the Center for Research in Environmental Epidemiology,
integrated with ISGlobal in 2016, where she leads the Projects Unit. Her main responsibilities
are on Strategic planning and policy development; Scientific agenda management; External
evaluations coordination, Ethical issues - GSP and Personal data protection.
Regarding to Ethics and Integrity, she provides support to researchers on ethics issues. She is
an ethics advisor in EU projects and collaborates with the European Commission as an
independent ethics expert since 2019 for several agencies and funding schemes (REA; HADEA,
ERC, IHI, EIC, MSCA). She's also ethics advisor in European projects.
Regarding personal data protection, she coordinates a dedicated working group at the
institution since 2017 for the adaptation and follow-up to the GDPR requirements. She was
appointed as the ISGlobal Data Protection Officer in 2018.
She teaches on the implementation of ethics and data protection in various national and
international courses and masters, as well as develops outreach activities with secondary and
high school students on these topics.
She is member of the ISGlobal Direction Committee, as well as the ISGlobal Committee for
Good Scientific Practices and the Compliance Committee. She is also a representative member
at the PRBB Good Scientific Practices Working Group.
She is very involved in European Association for Research Managers and Administrators
(EARMA). She was a core member of the Ethics and Research Integrity Officers Network
(ERION) from 2018 to 2022 and its chair from 2023 to 2025. She is currently an elected
member at the EARMA Board (May 2025).
