Sleep is an opportunity for the body to conserve energy and restore its normal processes. Sleep problems in children and adolescents are common (20-40%). Two of the main risk factors related to sleep problems that are less investigated in this life period are exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) and exposure to noise.
On one hand, the use of new telecommunication devices (mobiles, tablets, WiFi) is the main source of RF-EMF exposure in adolescence. It is not clear if it is the use of these devices themselves or the RF-EMF exposure they produce that is related to sleep problems. On the other hand, although sleep problems are one of the main effects of noise exposure in adults, there are almost no studies in adolescents which is one of the most vulnerable groups.
Objectives
To study the association between radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, noise, and sleep problems in adolescents participating in the INMA (INfancia y Medio Ambiente) Project.
Methods
We will include 5 cohorts of the Spanish INMA Project (Granada, Valencia, Sabadell, Asturias, Gipuzkoa), a prospective multicentre population-based birth cohort study. A total of 3,238 mother-child pairs were recruited during pregnancy or at birth in 2000-2008 and 1,944 children were followed until 7-8 years in Asturias and Gipuzkoa or 9-12 years in Granada, Valencia, and Sabadell, including follow-ups a different ages.
We will collect information on the new visits (11-12 years in Asturias and Gipuzkoaand 14-16 years in Granada, Valencia, and Sabadell) in 2017-2020. We will characterize the use of telecommunication devices, the integrated total RF-EMF exposure to the brain, and the residential noise exposure at different time windows, as well as the sleep problems using questionnaires and objective and detailed measurements. We will then perform the planned statistical analysis.
