The Global Metabolic Health Roundtable (GMHR) Series: Addressing the Public Health Threat of MASLD/MASH and other major NCDs was initiated by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) Public Health Liver Group and is led in partnership with the Healthy Livers Healthy Lives Coalition (HLHL). Together, we aim to foster dialogue, knowledge exchange, and policy action to address the public health threat of metabolic diseases, building on HLHL's global research and action priorities for steatotic liver disease (SLD), and the importance of recognising chronic liver disease, with a focus on MASLD/MASH, as a major NCD.
This series will consist of a virtual meeting in each of the following three regions in June 2025:
- Latin America and the Caribbean
- The Middle East and North Africa
- Asia and the Pacific
In each meeting, a multidisciplinary stakeholder group will convene to discuss regional priorities while contributing to a broader international agenda on metabolic health. A particular focus will be on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) to elevate their recognition as a priority alongside the more widely addressed metabolic diseases (e.g. diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease) within the global public health agenda.
The lively discussions form part of preparations for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-level Meeting (HLM) on NCDs in September 2025, and an in-person GMHR side-event in New York City during the UNGA HLM. The series also complements ongoing side-events in Geneva taking place during the World Health Assembly in May 2025 and will culminate with a session at the World Health Summit in October 2025.
