Alberto García-Basteiro Recognised as a “Fellow” by the European Respiratory Society

The ISGlobal researcher receives one of the most prestigious distinctions in the field of respiratory medicine

14.05.2025

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) has awarded the distinction of Fellow of ERS (FERS) to Alberto García-Basteiro, a researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to respiratory medicine through research, education, and clinical leadership.

International career and commitment to global health

Alberto García-Basteiro is an associate research professor at ISGlobal, a physician in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology of the Hospital Clínic Barcelona, and coordinator of the tuberculosis research area at the Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM) in Mozambique. His work focuses on evaluating the burden of tuberculosis in Africa and on developing new vaccines and diagnostic tools against the disease.

This distinction, awarded annually to ERS members with established scientific careers and demonstrated impact in the respiratory field, also involves participation in the Society’s advisory council. The ERS considers FERS members as ambassadors of the organisation and engages them in representative activities and mentorship processes for younger members.

“It is an honour to be part of this group of professionals committed to advancing knowledge and improving global respiratory health,” said García-Basteiro upon receiving the news. At ISGlobal, he joins fellow researcher Judith Garcia-Aymerich, who has also been a Fellow of ERS for years and currently serves as the Secretary General of the Society, further strengthening ISGlobal’s institutional presence in one of the most relevant scientific organisations in the respiratory field.

Recognition of international excellence

Alongside him, other researchers awarded the title of Fellow of ERS this year include Christian Benden, Isabel Blanco Vich, Matteo Bonini, Didier Cataldo, Rachel Chambers, Sara De Matteis, Monika Gappa, Ludger Grote, John W. Holloway, Alexander Mathioudakis, Francesca Polverino, Sejal Saglani, and Clifford Taggart.

The names of the 2025 Fellows were announced this week. The Society will gather the FERS community at the upcoming European Respiratory Society Congress, to be held in Amsterdam in September 2025.
