A Decade of Stalled Progress: Ensuring Commitment in the Fight Against Malaria

An ISGlobal policy paper

19.11.2025

The fight against malaria is at a critical point. While science and tools for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment have continued to advance, global progress has remained stalled since 2015, and there is a real risk of backsliding.

The funding gap, biological resistance, the growing impact of climate change, and humanitarian crises threaten to push us further away from the goals of the WHO Global Technical Strategy.

Adding to this is the withdrawal of funding from the United States —the largest donor until 2025— along with its discourse of distrust toward science and international institutions, which erodes public confidence and increases uncertainty.

This ISGlobal document analyses the situation and proposes that Spain catalyze a European consensus that keeps malaria on the international political agenda, promotes cooperation with high-burden countries, and defends science and evidence against misinformation and denialist narratives.
