Migration and Human Mobility

Translation and Impact Lines of Action

Human mobility is a fundamental social determinant of health in the 21st century. Movements driven by economic, climatic, political or demographic reasons are transforming how people access healthcare services, integrate into social protection systems, and experience environmental and occupational risks. Migrant populations often face structural barriers —legal, linguistic or economic— that affect their physical and mental wellbeing, while also making significant contributions to host societies and to the sustainability of their health systems. In a global context shaped by demographic ageing, climate crises and persistent inequalities, understanding the links between migration, equity and public health is essential for designing effective, rights-based policies.

ISGlobal addresses migration from an interdisciplinary perspective that connects research in global health with public policy analysis, social equity and international governance. The institute promotes an evidence-based approach that examines both the risks and opportunities associated with human mobility, incorporating dimensions such as urban health, the impacts of climate change, social protection, and equitable access to healthcare services. This approach seeks to move beyond simplistic narratives and to place people’s wellbeing at the centre of the debate, integrating scientific knowledge with the experience of institutional and community stakeholders.

The aim is to contribute to more coherent, inclusive and sustainable migration and health policies. Through the progressive development of applied research, strategic partnerships, and dialogue platforms with policymakers and international organisations, ISGlobal seeks to strengthen understanding of the role of human mobility in global health and to promote responses that reduce inequalities, enhance social resilience, and recognise diversity as a key component of collective wellbeing.
