Manolis Kogevinas Receives the EPICOH Lifetime Award for His Career in Occupational Epidemiology

ISGlobal researcher Manolis Kogevinas has been honoured with the EPICOH Lifetime Award, the highest distinction granted by the Scientific Committee on Epidemiology in Occupational Health (EPICOH) of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH). The award recognises his outstanding career in occupational epidemiology and his contribution to the development of evidence-based public health policies. The distinction was presented on 26 August during the annual EPICOH conference held in Stockholm.

The EPICOH Lifetime Award highlights more than three decades of scientific leadership by Kogevinas, helping to transform our understanding of how occupational exposures influence the development of chronic diseases, particularly cancer and respiratory diseases. Throughout his career, he has led some of the most influential international studies in occupational and environmental epidemiology, incorporating innovative approaches such as the exposome, advanced exposure assessment and the study of interactions between environmental and genetic factors.

The EPICOH committee also highlighted the impact of his work on risk assessment and prevention. His contributions have been instrumental in the international classification of occupational carcinogens through the development of key reference tools such as CAREX and the formulation of recommendations that have influenced European legislation and international strategies for the prevention of cancer and other work-related diseases.

In addition to his scientific contributions, the award highlights his role in the creation of international research networks, the training of new generations of epidemiologists, and his ability to translate scientific evidence into practice and public policy.

With this award, EPICOH recognises a scientific career that has helped establish occupational epidemiology as an essential discipline for understanding the impact of work on health and for promoting preventive policies that protect the health of workers worldwide.
