17.12.2014

The European Research Council (ERC) has selected 328 top scientists who will receive the Starting Grants this year, among which there are eight who develop their work in Catalan research centers. In total, 485 million euros were allocated, considering that the maximum that the ERC granted to a single scientist are two million.

The distinguished Catalan researchers account for 2.4% of the total and 40% of the 20 grantees of Spain. The winners are: David Carrera, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC); Darrick Chang, Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO); Manuel Irimia, from the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG); Nuria Montserrat, the Center for Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMRB); Albert Quintana, University Autonomous of Barcelona (UAB); Ruben Enikelopov, University Pompeu Fabra (UPF); Caterina Calsamiglia of Markets, Organizations and Votes in Economics (MOVE), and Iñaki Permanyer, Center for Demographic Studies (CED). Most of them are CERCA (a Catalan insitute of research) research centres.

Germany, with 70 researchers selected, ranks first, followed by the UK (55), France (43) and Netherlands (34).
