Equal-Life: Understanding how the environment shapes children’s mental health and cognitive development

Mental health is influenced by a complex combination of genetics, psychological factors, life experiences and the environments in which we live. Scientists are increasingly using the concept of the exposome —which considers the totality of exposures a person experiences from conception onwards— to better understand how environmental factors affect health.

The EU-funded Equal-Life project brings together experts from across Europe to investigate how both external factors (such as environmental conditions and social circumstances) and internal factors (including biological responses within the body) influence children’s mental health and development throughout childhood and adolescence.

By combining data from multiple sources and examining children and adolescents at different stages of life, the project aims to identify which environments best support healthy development. The results will contribute to generating evidence to inform policies and strategies for healthier environments for children.
