Rebeca Santano

Predoctoral Fellow Malaria

Rebeca Santano works at ISGlobal since 2017 in Carlota Dobaño's team as a PhD fellow. The focus of her research is to understand the mechanisms of immune deviation in malaria and, more specifically, during co-infections of Plasmodium falciparum and intestinal parasites.

She graduated in Health Biology by the Universidad de Alcalá in 2014. During her third year of university, she obtained a fellowship to initiate her research career at the Cell Biology Department of the University of Alcalá.

She spent her last year of the degree as an exchange student at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. There she performed her research project at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), working on the development of a functional assay to detect sensitivity to treatment in triple negative breast cancer.

She did an internship at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam in 2015 working as a research assistant in projects focused on malaria during pregnancy.

Then, she obtained her Master's degree in Tropical Parasitic Diseases by the Universidad de Valencia in 2016, where she also conducted her research project working on the immune mechanisms involved in resistance to infection to the mouse intestinal helminth Echinostoma caproni.

At the beginning of her period as a PhD fellow in ISGlobal, she spent two months at the Centro de Investigaçao em Saúde de Manhiça (CISM), Mozambique, as part of the training rotation programme offered by ISGlobal.
