Alex Almuedo

Medical Research Fellow

Dr Alex Almuedo-Riera is a consultant specialist in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the International Health and Tropical Medicine Service of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona–University of Barcelona, and a clinical researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) since 2018.

He trained in internal medicine at Hospital General de Granollers (2002–2007) and completed an MSc in Tropical Medicine and International Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (2014–2015), together with the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene of the Royal College of Physicians of London. He is a member of SEIMC-GESIDA and SEMTSI.

He previously practised in the Internal Medicine Department of Hospital General de Granollers, where he was part of the HIV–Infectious Diseases Unit. His work focuses on emerging and high-risk infectious diseases, viral haemorrhagic fevers, high-level isolation units (HLIUs) and the health of migrant populations, with fieldwork in Nigeria, Bolivia, Sierra Leone and Mozambique.

Since 2022 he has collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a consultant on the Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers team. He is an associate professor at the University of Barcelona and coordinator of the Infectious Diseases and Global Health module in the Global Health master's programmes of ISGlobal and the University of Barcelona.
