Alicia Astorga Elcarte is a Data Scientist at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). She holds a BSc in Physics from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and an MSc in Quantum Physics from the University of Copenhagen, and has expanded her training through coursework in computational neuroscience and biomedical image analysis.

She previously worked as an Automation and Analytics Consultant at Pharma IT in Copenhagen, gaining experience in software automation and data analysis in the pharmaceutical sector.

At ISGlobal, she contributes to Democra-MITS, a project that aims to make postmortem mortality surveillance more accessible in low-resource settings by simplifying minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS) protocols, so that reliable cause-of-death information can be obtained more affordably and at scale. As a Data Scientist on the project, she works on data curation and on developing models that identify which tests contribute most to determining the cause of death across different age groups, helping to design simpler, evidence-based MITS protocols.
