Neglected Tropical Diseases: Chagas Disease

26.2.2013

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of infectious diseases that affect some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable populations. They are particularly common in low-income countries, where they contribute to perpetuating the cycle of disease and poverty in affected communities.

NTDs are a widespread cause of disease and death, but unlike other infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis, they receive little or no attention from the international community and even less funding for research and disease management programmes.

Chagas disease is one of 17 NTDs recognised by the World Health Organization: it affects disadvantaged populations in the majority of countries in Latin America and has a profound impact on affected populations and the economy of many of the countries in which it is endemic. Despite this, however, there is a distinct lack of initiatives targeting research, disease control and medical care to those in need.
