Sergi Loughney Castells

Deputy CEO for Corporate Affairs at the ”la Caixa” Foundation

Sergi Loughney Castells completed the Executive Development Programme at IESE Business School and holds degrees in Public Relations from the University of Barcelona and in Business and Tourism Activities from CETT–Escola de Turisme. He is a member of the International Institute of Management and Public Relations.

He is Deputy CEO for Corporate Affairs at the ”la Caixa” Foundation. In this capacity he leads the areas of Communication, Marketing and Institutional Relations, and coordinates the institutional activity of CaixaForum, CosmoCaixa, Cap Roig and Palau Macaya.

Prior to his current role, he served as Director of Corporate Relations at the ”la Caixa” Foundation and, previously, as Director of Forecasting and Palau Macaya. Earlier in his career he was Director of Corporate Reputation and Communications at Abertis and Director of Communications and Corporate Relations at Grupo Peralada. He also held several senior positions in the Government of Catalonia, including Director of Protocol and the Presidency’s External Relations, after having served as Manager and Officer in the same area.

Loughney is actively engaged in the social and health sectors. He is a member of UNICEF’s Spanish Committee Awards Jury; a member of the advisory board to Hospital Clínic Barcelona; a board member of the Barcelona Macula Foundation; an advisor to the Economic Committee of the Guttmann Institute; a key founder of the UNESCO–Abertis Foundation Centre for Mediterranean Ecosystem Biosphere Reserves; a member of the Governing Council of the CaixaBank Volunteers Association, where he serves as Second Vice-President; and a trustee of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal).

Over the course of his career, he has been distinguished with numerous national and international honours, including decorations such as the Cross of the Order of Military Merit, the Cross of Civil Merit, the Order of May (Argentina), the Grand Cross of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Great Cross of Encomienda of Isabel the Catholic, the Order of the Star of Italy, and several distinctions from the Guardia Civil and the Red Cross.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Loughney has had a prominent career in rugby, earning 56 international caps as captain of the Spanish national team. He captained both FC Barcelona’s rugby team and the Catalan regional team, served as Vice-President of the Spanish Rugby Federation, and has worked as a rugby commentator for TVE and TV3. He is a native speaker of Catalan, Spanish and English, and has advanced knowledge of French and Italian.
