New York bans fracking

14.01.2015

The Department of Health of the State of New York has assessed the potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing high volume (fracking) and have decided to ban this activity in the state of New York (one of the most important states in reserves of natural gas) by its effects on both the environment and the possible effects on the population.

Dr. David Rojas, CREAL researcher, in alliance with ISGlobal, said "it's a good decision that should be considered by other regions and countries." Besides this Dr. Rojas notes that "fracking impacts on health are mainly related to water pollution, air and soil, affecting biodiversity as populations near the extraction weels". He adds that "this type of mining activity has also been associated with significant occupational risks from exposure to silica and different chemical compounds."

This CREAL researcher concludes that "this is a great step taken by the authorities of the State of New York, based on recommendations from health professionals, and should serve as an example for other regions, especially in Europe making strengthening decisions about fracking prioritizing health of the population."
Next 21st January the association ‘New Yorkers against fracking’ will celebrate the banning fracking in New York. (http://nyagainstfracking.org/victory-over-fracking-come-celebrate-on-january-7/)
