24.11.2014

On 13 and 14 November CREAL, with the collaboration of the Institute of Health Carlos III, organized the annual meeting of all research centers participating in the research project MCC-Spain, studying the causes of various cancers (colorectal, breast, stomach, prostate and chronic lymphocytic leukemia). This year was held at the Foundation for the Promotion of Biomedical and Health Research in the Region of Valencia (FISABIO) and met a total of 40 researchers from 17 centers CIBERESP (Epidemiology and Public Health).

These were the seventh meeting of the sciences group in which data is organized approximately 6,000 cases of cancers that until today have been collected as well as over 4,000 population controls. All these data come from real cases of cancers of almost all regions of Spain: Catalonia, Madrid, Navarra, Basque Country, Castilla and Leon, Asturias, Murcia, Andalusia, Cantabria and Valencia. There were presentations of preliminary results of the various working groups: genetic, clinical and molecular methods, water, nutrition and physical activity, tobacco use, social inequality, family history, hormonal factors and endocrine disruption, infections, drugs and metals.
Moreover, Dr. Ana Maria Garcia, Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, University of Valencia, and Dr. Juan Alguacil, from Huelva University, gave a lecture on 13th November entitled MatEmEsp: job-exposure matrix for Spanish worker population and MCC-Spain. Dr. Gonzalo López-Abente from the National Centre of Epidemiology from Institute of Health Carlos III, gave a lecture entitled "Focus contaminants and MCC."

We should add that the MCC-Spain study is coordinated by Dr. Manolis Kogevinas, co-director of CREAL, and Dr. Marina Pollán, head of Cancer Epidemiology (Instituto de Salud Carlos III).
