CREAL researcher Marie Pedersen has received this morning the 2013 Rebecca James Baker Award at the ISEE (International Society for Environmental Epidemiology) Awards Plenary and also the “Best Environmental Epidemiology Paper”. Last year, another CREAL researcher, Dr. Payam Dadvand, won the ISEE Rebeca James Baker Award and the "Best New Researcher Abstract Award".

The organization has recognized her work, her commitment to the principles outlined in the prize criteria, and strong letters of recommendation. “We feel that your work and approach to life honors the memory of Rebecca and reflects the principles that she believed in and worked toward”, explained the committee.

In fact, to honor Rebecca's memory and to encourage students and new investigators to follow her example, the Rebecca James Baker Award is given each year at the ISEE annual conference. Graduate level students and new investigators who are within three years of having completed their degree are invited to apply.

The environmental epidemiologist Rebecca James Baker died unexpectedly at age 33 in August 2004, of a pregnancy-related heart condition. Those who knew her were impressed by her intelligence, modesty and kindness, dedication, and wisdom in every aspect of life. She was particularly committed to environmental epidemiology as a tool for improving public health and quality of life and to working with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
