Javier Solana Inaugurates 2013-14 Master of Global Health Programme

Javier Solana gave a speech entitled "Geopolitics and Global Health"

21.10.2013

Javier Solana, Vice-president of ISGlobal's Board of Trustees and President of the ESADE Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics, officially launched the second edition of the ISGlobal-University of Barcelona Master of Global Health on October 17, with a speech entitled Geopolitics and Global Health. The event was attended by students from the Master of Global Health and from the international health track of the Master of Clinical Research coordinated by ISGlobal.

During his talk, Solana explained that the world is now an interdependent place with global rather than local problems and warned that the greatest challenge was to find solutions that were also global. By way of example, he cited the case of Chagas disease, an international health problem associated with migratory flows that is now present in Spain.

Solana also highlighted the need for developing countries to continue to grow and narrow the gaps with developed countries and to participate in the current global governance system, established in the wake of World War II.

The ISGlobal-UB Master of Global Health is one of the first postgraduate programmes to address health from a global, multidisciplinary perspective in Spain. It is the result of a collaborative effort between ISGlobal, its research centre CRESIB, the University of Barcelona and institutions such as Médicos Sin Fronteras, IntermónOxfam and CREAL (Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology).
