The 45th Union World Conference on Lung Health will focus on the need to find solutions to lung health challenges by involving all stakeholders, from health professionals and policy-makers to the people and communities they serve. Organised by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, the event will run from 28 October to 1 November and is being held in Barcelona for the first time. ISGlobal is participating in several sessions during the conference.

On Tuesday 28 October, ISGlobal researcher Julià González will moderate a panel discussion on innovations in microbiology. The session forms part of the International Tuberculosis Workshop, an annual event organised by the Tuberculosis Investigation Unit of Barcelona with the aim of improving the prevention and control of tuberculosis (TB). Two days later, Clara Menéndez, Director of the Maternal, Child and Reproductive Health Initiative at ISGlobal, will discuss TB in special populations in a talk entitled "Tuberculosis: A Neglected Cause of Maternal Mortality".

ISGlobal researcher Elisa López will make several contributions on the topic of childhood TB in Mozambique, the country where she is currently working. On Thursday she will present the results of a study on HIV-TB co-infection in children in rural Mozambique. The following day she will give a talk on the epidemiology of childhood TB, focusing on the difficulty of estimating the burden of the disease in children in rural Mozambique. Dr López will also present a poster about a study on the perception of childhood TB in the community.

The Union World Conference on Lung Health is currently the leading international platform for announcing new scientific research on TB and other lung diseases that affect the world's most vulnerable populations.
