Thanks to the Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence distinction, a new International Predoctoral Call in Global Health has been launched this year by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), with 8 fellowships for national and international PhD students offered.

The aim of this call is to support excellent predoctoral researchers to foster interdisciplinary science, in line with the core objective of the ISGlobal Severo Ochoa Programme. The call is addressed to PhD students who wish to undertake rigorous research training and complete a research project in the field of global health and population studies to make new contributions to the existing knowledge base.

The ISGlobal PhD Programme brings together doctoral candidates from different health fields, and universities, to enjoy the added benefits of developing transdisciplinary research at our Institute.

Applicants can choose among 27 research topics covering a wide range of subjects in the field of global heath, including COVID-19, malaria, chagas and other infectious diseases, air pollution, climate and non-communicable diseases. Given the interdisciplinarity of the PhD Research Proposals, each PhD student will be jointly supervised by two Principal Investigators (a Supervisor and a Co-Supervisor).

Among other requirements, scholarship applicants must have obtained a University Degree and a Master’s Degree in biomedicine, epidemiology, computer sciences, environmental sciences, biostatistics, or a related discipline within the European Higher Education Area (minimum 300 ECTS, of which at least 60 are at master’s level), or an equivalent University Degree that allows to start a PhD thesis in Spain by the fellowship starting date. The scientific committee overseeing the selection process will assess the candidates’ academic excellence and a commitment to pursuing a scientific research career with an interest in global health and population studies.

The call for applications will be open from 30 March to 30 April.

ISGlobal, Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence

ISGlobal was named in October 2019 a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence by the Spanish State Research Agency, a body affiliated with the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. ISGlobal is the only global health centre accredited as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence. This accreditation recognises the excellence, scientific contributions, social and economic impact, and talent-attracting capacity of research centres in Spain and elsewhere. The purpose of the award is to fund and distinguish research centres and public research units that have developed highly competitive, cutting-edge research programmes positioned among the best in the world in their respective scientific fields. The award provides €4 million in funding over a four-year period, which has allowed ISGlobal to promote several initiatives, as an International PhD Fellowships Call in Global Health (in 2020 and 2021), and an International Postdoc Call in Global Health in 2021.
