It is with deep sadness that the ISGlobal community says goodbye to Mikel Martínez Yoldi, Clinical Director of the Biomedical Diagnostic Centre at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and an associate researcher at our institution. His passing represents a great loss to ISGlobal’s scientific and human community, an institution to which he was closely linked for many years.

Graduating in Medicine from the University of Navarra (1999) and earning his PhD from the University of Barcelona (2011), Mikel Martínez Yoldi specialised in Microbiology at Hospital Clínic. After establishing himself as an expert in high-risk viruses at INSERM in Lyon (France) between 2005 and 2009, he developed his career as a senior specialist at Clínic and associate professor at the University of Barcelona. His research focused on arboviruses, emerging viruses and infectious causes of mortality in low-income countries.

“Mikel was a committed, generous person who was deeply passionate about his work. His extensive experience, scientific rigour and warmth made him an invaluable colleague and role model for all of us who had the privilege of working alongside him. His absence will be deeply felt,” expressed his colleagues at ISGlobal.

On behalf of the entire ISGlobal team, we extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this very difficult time.
