Why are women a higher risk of Alzheimer's? | Eider Arenaza-Urquijo

Videopodcast: Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias: Risk and Protective Factors

03.07.2025

In this video podcast, we speak with neuroscientist Eider Arenaza-Urquijo about Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The ISGlobal researcher explains that 14 factors have been identified as being linked to either increased protection or greater risk of developing dementia—particularly the most common type, Alzheimer’s disease.

We delve into some of these factors, such as education, and also discuss the roles of sex and gender. Two out of three people living with Alzheimer’s are women—a fact influenced not only by biological sex, but also by gender roles.

Dr. Arenaza-Urquijo also shares some of the studies she has led at ISGlobal. For instance, we learn that increasing physical activity during midlife is a protective factor against Alzheimer’s.

Similarly, she explains how certain stressors—such as the loss of a partner or financial hardship—are linked to a higher risk of developing the disease or experiencing related effects, such as brain atrophy.

Finally, she outlines the research lines currently being pursued by her team, as well as the latest advances in Alzheimer’s research and diagnosis.
