Launch of new European Code Against Cancer

CREAL co-Director, Manolis Kogevinas, participated as an expert in the elaboration of the Code

14.10.2014

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), today launches the 4th edition of the European Code Against Cancer with the participation of the European Commission. Based on the best available scientific evidence, the new Code provides 12 ways to adopt healthier lifestyles and boost cancer prevention across Europe. It is the outcome of a two-year collaborative work between cancer specialists, scientists, and other experts from across the European Union (EU).

CREAL co-Director, Manolis Kogevinas, participated as an expert in the elaboration of the Code. He mentions “The European Code is an important tool in our fight to prevent cancer. It focuses on individual measures, what a person can do to prevent cancer. For this reason the Code does not refer to community actions although the text that accompanies the Code identifies clearly the need for wider measures to prevent disease, such as control of air-pollution or reduction of health inequalities”.
