Professor Linda S. Birnbaum from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) will give a talk titled: "The Problem of PFAS”.  Professor Linda is Scientist Emeritus and Former Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and National Toxicology Program (NTP).

PFAS, per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, are a huge class of non-classical persistent organic pollutants (POPs) which will last essentially forever in the environment. They are used as surfactants, stain repellants, fire suppression, and more. We are all exposed via air, water, house/office dust, and food. While only a few members of this class have been extensively studied, they cause a plethora of effects, including altered lipids, immune suppression, lowered thyroid, and cancer, in both sexes of essentially all animals studied, including humans.
