CHICOS organizes its workshop during 11 and 12 April

24.03.2011

CHICOS, a research project funded by European Comission, will hold a workshop next 11 and 12 April to assess and prepare for robust health data for birth/mother-child cohorts over a substantial time period (the next 15 years) by evaluating data from existing cohorts, registers and relevant European databases, identifying gaps in knowledge, and developing recommendations for targeted research action at the European level.

During these days, 70 people approximately of 40 European cohorts, involved in this project leaded by CREAL, will discuss about these issues and they will focused their discussion on the wider determinants of child health and how new knowledge from cohort studies can contribute to the best public health measures in terms of life-style, work and living circumstances.

Furthermore they will assess scientific evidence at the individual and community level (e.g. relating to socio-economic factors and cultural context, diet and physical activity, tobacco, alcohol and other substances, and environmental factors). Also they’ll evaluate, whenever possible, the need to conduct targeted research in specific regions of Europe.

You are invited to attend sessions of your interest at the PRBB Auditorium to the keynote lectures on day 1 and 2.

This 1.5 day long workshop is aimed at bringing together EU birth cohorts to discuss ways to improve coordination between birth cohorts across Europe and contribute to achieving the main objective of the CHICOS project: to develop an integrated strategy for cohort research in Europe.

Key speakers include:
- Prof. Linda Richter – Distinguished Research Fellow of the Human Sciences Research Council, and Senior Specialist from the COHORT collaboration of cohorts in low and middle income countries, Durban, SA.
- Prof. Anthony Staines, Professor of Health Systems Research at Dublin City University and Coordinator of the FP7 funded RICHE project, running parallel to CHICOS (http://www.childhealthresearch.eu/)
- Prof. Debby Lawlor, Professor of Epidemiology and Deputy Director of MRC Centre for Causal Analyses in Translational Epidemiology, Bristol, UK
- European Cohort Project Coordinators Dr. Thomas Keil (GA²LEN) and Prof. Mark Nieuwenhuijsen (ENRIECO).
