Population Mental Health Group

The PopMental research group combines advanced epidemiological methods with large administrative datasets (e.g. electronic health records) to investigate the causes and consequences of mental disorders.

Our research focuses on generating robust evidence to better understand mental health across populations and to inform policy and practice.

Research Areas

  • Assessing the impact of mental disorders on health and societal outcomes, including comorbidity (within mental disorders and with physical conditions) and mortality.
  • Advancing understanding of the social, health and environmental determinants of mental disorders.
  • Developing methodological approaches to improve the accuracy and validity of register-based studies. This includes addressing limitations of electronic databases (e.g. incorporating data on social relationships or lifestyle factors through surveys) and accounting for changes in patient characteristics over time.
