Oferta de trabajo: Junior postdoctoral researcher for development of rapid diagnostic tests for malaria (department of travel medicine)

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. ISGlobal has a broad portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level. Research is organized in the following main areas, Malaria and other Infectious Diseases, Maternal, Child and reproductive Health, Urban Health and Child and environmental health, Climate & Non-Communicable Diseases.  ISGlobal is accredited with the Severo Ochoa distinction, a seal of excellence of the Spanish Science Ministry.

What We Are Looking for

ISGlobal is seeking a junior postdoctoral researcher who is interested in joining the project G-SensMalaria. The overall project goal is to develop a multiplexed aptamer-based electrochemical sensor for the diagnosis and prognosis of malaria in international travellers. The project is a collaboration between private and public institutions, including  GraphenicaLab and Eurecat. We are specifically looking for someone with a strong electrochemical or biotechnological background. Priority will be given to those candidates with experience in the development of biosensors, with knowledge on aptamers and proven scientific production.

The selected candidate will join the multidisciplinary research group led by Prof. Muñoz in the area of Malaria and Other Infections Diseases and Travel Medicine.  The group’s activities range from basic epidemiological and biotechnological research to clinical interventions and patient management (working with the  International Travel Service of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona). For this particular position the candidate will report directly to Dr. Parolo, a biotechnologist with over 15 years of experience in the development of rapid diagnostic tests.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be responsible for the development and validation of the aptamer-based electrochemical sensors.

Specific Duties

  • Laboratory duties (85%):
  • Validation of patient samples using gold standard techniques (e.g., ELISA, Luminex, LFAs);
  • Selection of aptamers using SELEX;
  • Engineering of the aptamers to maximize their binding-induced conformational change;
  • Development of aptamer-based electrochemical sensors using a variety of electrodes;
  • Validation of the developed sensors with patient samples.
  • Office duties (15%):
  • Analysis of the results;
  • Writing of the project reports and peer-review manuscripts;
  • Communication with project’s collaborators (GraphenicaLab and Eurecat).
