Health Recommendations for the International Traveller

28.5.2014

IIf you are going to make a trip abroad you may be interested in knowing a few things that are important for your health.

You need to start planning an international trip well in advance. Depending on your destination and the duration and type of trip, there may be potential risks for your health. You should look for specific information on your destination and find out whether you need any new vaccinations (or a booster for those you already have) or drugs for malaria prevention.
In 2012 the number of international travellers worldwide reached 1,035 million topping the billion mark for the first time in history (World Tourism Organization). Asia and the Pacific, together with Africa, and the Americas, recorded the fastest growth in international visitors. Travelling to some destinations in these regions may represent a potential health risk.
One of the most common diseases is traveller´s diarrhoea so drink bottled water and be careful with raw food. You should also protect yourself from mosquito bites, which in some countries can transmit diseases such as yellow fever, dengue and malaria. If you are taking prescription medication pack enough to last for the entire trip.
International Traveller Clinics provide information and advice on the prevention of diseases that can be acquired through international travel. They also administer the recommended vaccines. When planning your trip, contact one of these clinics and ensure you have your vaccines card updated.
