COP25 Madrid

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is participating in the COP25, also known as the Climate Summit, which is being held in Madrid from December 2 to 13. In addition to participating in several events of the programme, ISGlobal is organising a session in the parallel programme, the round table entitled Planetary Health: A Balance between the Welfare of the Planet and that of Human Beings .

This debate, selected among more than 1,500 proposals presented for the parallel programme, will take place on December 11 at 15h30 in the COP25’s Green Zone, and can be followed by streaming. The event will address the concept of Planetary Health, which proposes that the health of the planet and that of its inhabitants are linked to such an extent that it makes no sense to address the latter without considering the former. The conversation will be moderated by Gonzalo Fanjul, Policy director at ISGlobal, and will feature Josep M. Antó, scientific director at ISGlobal, Lela Mélon, Marie Curie Fellow at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), Cristina Narbona, member of the Spanish Network for Sustainable Development (REDS) and María José Sanz, director of the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3).

The event is free, but previous registration is necessary .

‘Safe School Environments’ Campaign

The ‘Safe School Environments’ campaign ( www.entornosescolares.es) will be presented on Saturday, December 7th. The initiative aims to persuade authorities to take measures aimed at making schools and their surrounding environment greener, less polluted and safer for active transport, among others. The campaign is promoted by the Mobility and Childhood group, of which ISGlobal is a member..

Conference on Low Emissions

On December 9 and 10, the ‘Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales de Madrid’ will host the conference Systems Transformation for a 1.5 Degree World . It is a proposal of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) to encourage a dialogue between the private sector, governments and academia in order to boost their respective strategies for a low emissions development. Leire Pajín, director of Global Development at ISGlobal and president of REDS, will participate in this event.

Dialogue between Jeffrey Sachs and Mariana Mazzucato

Pajín will also moderate “ Transformations to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals ”, a conversation between Jeffrey Sachs, SDSN director, and Mariana Mazzucato, director of the Institute for Innovation and Public Service at University College London. Sachs and Mazzucato are co-authors of the publication entitled “ Six Transformations to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals ”.

Lastly, on December 13th Pajin will also participate in the event “ Accelerating Climate Action with the 2030 Agenda: Building a Fair and Sustainable Globalization ”, organised by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In addition, ISGlobal will be present in two debates related to health: the Global Summit on Climate and Health 2019, organised by the WHO and the Global Climate and Health Alliance at the Complutense University (December 7th), and the Sanidad #PorelClima meeting that will take place at the Hospital Cruz Roja on December 10.
