High School Students Learn About ISGlobal’s Work

ISGlobal, Hospital Clínic and the Mar Health Park participate in the “Youth for Medicine” initiative organised by the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation

10.12.2021

On Saturday 27 November, 25 first- and second-year high school students from Barcelona came to the University of Barcelona’s Manuel Corachán Lecture Hall to learn first-hand about the work we do at ISGlobal in two highly topical areas. Jordi Vila, director of the Antimicrobial Resistance Initiative at ISGlobal, head of the Microbiology Department at Hospital Clínic and professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Barcelona, gave a talk on the current problem of antibiotic resistance and how to combat it. After the talk, the students attended a session on how to prepare for future pandemics and epidemics, led by ISGlobal researchers Elizabet Diago Navarro and Natalia Rodríguez, who will be joined in future sessions by José Muñoz.

This is the first of six groups of students that will visit ISGlobal and the University of Barcelona Faculty of Medicine over the next few months as part of the “Youth for Medicine” programme of the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation’s Science Academy, an initiative that ISGlobal, Hospital Clínic and the Mar Health Park all collaborate with. The programme aims to provide first-hand experience of what it is like to work in a hospital or research centre to students who are interested in careers related to medicine, health research or other health professions.
