The Nobel Prize in Medicine 2013, Dr Randy Schekman, will offer the open conference entitled "Sorting of small RNAs for secretion in exosomes", at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), on May 4. Antonio Marcilla (University of Valencia) and Hernando A. del Portillo (ICREA at ISGlobal and IGTP) will also participate as guests.

Randy W. Schekman

Randy Wayne Schekman is a Howard Hughes Scholar and Professor in Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, USA and former editor-in-chief of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In 2011, he was announced as the editor of eLife, a new high-profile open-access journal published by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society and the Wellcome Trust launching in 2012. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1992.

Schekman shared the 2013 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with James Rothman and Thomas C. Südhof for their ground-breaking work on cell membrane vesicle trafficking, a major transport system in our cells.

His lab studies membrane assembly, vesicular transport, and membrane fusion among organelles of the secretory pathway. Basic principles that emerged from his past studies in yeast are now being applied to studies of genetic diseases of protein transport, as well to the study of extracellular vesicles.
