José María Leal received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Valladolid and was granted by the Fulbright Commission as a post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin, USA. He also stayed as a researcher in the Universities of Bielefeld (Germany) and Pisa (Italy). Currently he is Full Professor in Physical Chemistry at the University of Burgos. He has authored over hundred and ten peer-reviewed scientific papers. His research interest is focused on Biomedicinal Chemistry, looking into new anticancer drugs.
He has served as the Rector of the University of Burgos and as a member of the Spanish Universities Board. In 2007 he was awarded Honoris Causa PhD by the Beijing City University. He evaluates regularly proposals from the Spanish National Evaluation and Foresight Agency (ANEP), research projects from the Quality Agencies of the Governments of Madrid, Galicia, and Balearic Islands, and is a peer-reviewer of leading international journals in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Medicinal Chemistry. He was appointed as responsible for the Erasmus Exchange Programs of the University of Burgos with the universities of Dublin, Pisa, Bielefeld, Bochum, Halle (East) and Leipzig, some still active.
